Preposition of Place

Prepositions of place are used to refer to some place or a specific place where something is placed or located.

Place prepositions are also used to specify direction.  These are used with nouns or pronouns. Prepositions are never used before a verb.

  1. Basic Prepositions – (in, on, at)
  2. Place Prepositions – (in front of, behind, under, over, next to)
  3. Prepositions of place expressing movement – (at, in, to, by, into, on)
  4. Movement Prepositions – (through, over, across)

Basic Prepositions of Place: in, on, at

These are used to describe where something is inside (enclosed space) or something is surrounded.

Basic Preposition Examples:

The horse is in the garden. (The horse is in the garden.) 
The cat is in the box. (The cat is in the box.) 
Her keys are in the bag. (Her keys are in the bag.) 
There is no one in the room. ( No one is in the room.) 
There is a turtle in the water. ( There is a turtle in the water)

It is also used to express the geographical location (cities, countries, continents.) 
Example: 
I used to live in Poland. (I once lived in Poland.) 
She works in London. (Works in London.) 

Used in small vehicles ( in the car, in the taxi)

Example:

She’s in a taxi. (She’s in a taxi.)

I left the shopping in the car. (I left the car in the car.)

on – we use it to express the position on the surface.

Example:

The dog is on the table. (The dog is on the table.) 
There is a gecko on the wall. ( On the wall is a gecko.) 
The cat is on the roof. (The cat is on the roof.) 
There is a spider on the ceiling. ( There ‘s a spider on the ceiling.)

he also uses:

– to express their position in streets or roads. 
– to express geographical location, in particular islands and rivers. 
Example:
I live on Paris Street. (I live in Pařížská Street.) 
He lives on a small island. (Living on a small island).

Prague is on the Vltava river. (Prague is on the Vltava river.) 
Sydney is on the east coast of Australia. (Sydney is on the east coast of Australia.) 

Used on public transport ( on the bus, train, plane) and on the means of transport on which he is sitting – on the horse, on a bike)

I lost it on the bus. (I lost it on the bus). 
There is a toilet on the plane. ( There is a toilet on the plane.) 
I have a broken chain on my bike. ( I have a broken chain on the bike.)

at – We use to represent a specific location or location for a particular point. 
Example:

They are waiting at the bus stop. (Waiting at the bus stop.) 
Someone is at the door. (Someone is behind the door.)

I can see him at the window. (I see him at the window.) 
I’ll meet you at the entrance. (I’ll meet at the entrance.) 
I met him at a party. (I met him at a party.) 

At also used to represent a precise description – addresses 
Example:

I used to live at 51 Paris Street. (I lived in Pařížská Street No. 51. )

Place Prepositions: -in front of, behind, under, over, next to 

in front of front =

In front of the house. (In front of the house) 
behind = behind
Behind the house. (Behind the house) 
under = under 
Under the table. (Under the table.) 
Over = over 
The plane flying over the building. (Airplanes fly over the building.)

next to = next to 
The Flower Shop is next to the restaurant. (The florist is beside the restaurant.)

Prepositions of Place Expressing Movement – at, in, to, by, into, on

Attention: 
prepositions – at-in, in the expression of the movement are associated with the verb arrive :

We say: come 
in a country (or other – names of cities, states, and continents)

I arrived in Prague. (I came to Prague.) 
I landed in Australia. (I landed in Australia.) 
ALE 
arrive at the airport (or other – names of places or events)

I arrived at the party. (I came to the party.) 
I arrived at the airport. (I came to the airport.)

BUT

We arrived home. (We came home.)

 we use it to describe the direction – from where / where

prepositions – this is often the case with the following verbs: 
go / come / travel / fly / walk / return / drive / have been etc., if they are related to a place or event

We say: 
go to Italy

go to school

travel to Prague

drive to the summer house

walk to work

come to me 
go to the door 

ALE 
“go home, come home, drive home,” etc.

 we use:

go into / come into the sense of entering a building or a room.

Example:

I saw him as soon as he walked into the room. (I saw him as soon as he entered the room.) 

 We would use it when expressing the way we travel:

Example:

I go to work by bus. 
I used to go to school by bike. 
We say:

by bus, by car, by train, by taxi, by plane, by bike 
Attention: in the above cases, a noun is used without a member

But

walk on foot: on foot

Prepositions of Movement: – through, across, over, between, out

through, we use to express motion by closed space from one end to the other

Example:

You should go through the tunnel.

– across we use to express motion from one end (open space / surface to the other)

Example:

She walked across the frozen lake. 
My house is across the street. 

– along – along – we use to express motion along the length (river, road …)

Example:

He walked slowly along the road.

over – over

Example:

You can not drive over this bridge, your truck’s too heavy. 

– above – above

Example:

The picture is above the sofa.

– between – between (two)
Example:

The girl is sitting between the two boys.

– among – between (more than two)
Example:

He is the only boy among girls.

– from – of, from
Example:

He came back from school.

– out of – z
Example:

He got out of the car.

– off – of
Example:

He fell off the roof.

More about place prepositions

  • In /an /from /under /over / across Multan
  • When the speaker is enclosed by the area, he uses “in”. For example, I live in Multan.
  • When he considers it as a point, he uses “at” with it. For example, We stopped at Multan on the way to Lahore.
  • Some prepositions like (into, onto, out of, to) combine with movement verbs normally. For example, A bird flew into my room early morning.
  • Prepositions like (at, in on) normally combine with only position verbs. For example, 
    • I waited for you in the hotel.
    • I live at Bosan Colony in Multan.
